Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a pioneering training process that can enable the control of physiological systems that are normally considered involuntary, such as breathing, muscle tension, blood pressure and heart rate.

Precise sensors measure physiological activity such as heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments then rapidly feedback to the client and the presentation of this information in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions and behaviour support desired physiological changes. Our computer converts this physiological activity into audio and visual feedback on a screen that the client can train to change and optimise each system- such as reduce muscle tension from an injury, increase finger temperature in Raynaulds disease or reduce faster breathing cause by anxiety.

Biofeedback works with the regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), this is also more commonly known as flight/flight/freeze (sympathetic branch) and rest and digest (parasympathetic branch).

Busy, stressful modern lifestyles, health conditions and psychological trauma can all leave our ANS unbalanced, often stuck in fight or flight activation. During biofeedback training we work to help it become more balanced and less reactive to certain triggers such as stress.

Breathing is the corner stone of training in Biofeedback, it can help influence our autonomic nervous system and by learning how to breathe optimally for our body we can learn to bring about increased balance and calmness. We often incorporate Buteyko breathing into this, for more information please see our page on Buteyko Breathing.

Heart Rate Variability

Training your natural heart rhythm to be in sync with your respiration can greatly improve heart rate variability and research indicates this is linked to better physical and emotional health. Potential benefits could include;

  • Reduced high blood pressure

  • Reduced anxiety and panic attacks

  • Better emotional regulation and responsiveness

  • Improved physical resilience

  • Improved cognition and memory

  • Improvement in length and frequency of asthma exacerbations

  • Optimal performance training

  • Sports and skills development

Other ways we can help

  • Initial Consultation

In our initial consultation and assessment process, the client meets with one of our licensed mental health care professionals so that we can best determine your needs and explain our process and training modalities in full.

  • QEEG Brain Mapping

A quantitative EEG is a brain map. This is an electrical measurement, analysis, and quantification of the brainwaves. The brainwaves are the brain’s verbing, or the action potentials of the brain.

  • Neurofeedback

This is a non-invasive treatment which works toward improving the root source of symptoms. It differs from medicine as it treats the issue at its core, not the symptoms that result.

  • Buteyko breathing

Named after Dr Konstantin Buteyko, the Buteyko Method consists of a series of breathing exercises and guidelines specifically designed to reduce over-breathing (clinically known as ‘chronic hyperventilation’).

  • Therapy

Our highly skilled therapists provide a therapeutic approach that focuses on full recovery as opposed to a ‘temporary fix’. It is accessible for children, young people, and adults.
